The scientific approach to healing through the body
What is Somatic Experiencing®?
The therapy is called Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) and it works on the nervous system which connects the brain and the body. Awareness of the sensations in the body gives access to the nervous system and the body’s natural healing powers to resolve trauma, shock, and stress related disorders. SE focuses on your body’s natural rhythm to complete stuck actions to resolve trauma and stress, allowing the body’s system to self-organise.
Humans like all living systems in nature have an innate wisdom to process trauma acquired through evolution and life wants to flourish through us. SE is a therapy that can tap into this wisdom through the nervous system to transform you into a harmonised and embodied self, with connection to others.
SE is developed by Dr Peter Levine who has worked with stress disorders and trauma for over 45 years of successful clinical application. Dr Peter Levine developed SE through the multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics. SE is based on the same regulatory and stress discharge mechanisms that humans have as mammals do in the wild. Through the careful study of the mammalian world in the wild who are granted the wisdom by nature to overcome trauma on a regular basis we too can access this wisdom and energy to recover that part of us that has become disconnected to itself, and become in touch with our bodies again.
The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of early emotional and early developmental attachment trauma, or a specific traumatic event. SE works with the nervous system and therefore has a variety of approaches.
To become whole (to heal) it is essential to work on the whole - the mind and the body.
How does it work?
SE therapy works on the impulses, experienced as sensations in the body, that are stuck from the time of the stressful experience. The sensations, for example tightness, continue to live within the body and are designed to protect the self. By bringing attention to the sensations in the body and the experience of the mind for example the emotion of anger, we follow the natural intuition for action which was previously suppressed. Completing the action brings closure to the previously stuck impulses and addresses the root cause of trauma symptoms.
The therapist (me) will gently guide the client to become sensitive to the sensations in the body and the associated suppressed emotions. The therapist will work with the client in a way that difficult experiences become tolerable. After the sensations are worked through the nervous system brings calmness and openness for connection to the self in body and mind, and to others.
In SE, the traumatic event isn’t what caused the trauma, it is the overwhelming response to the perceived life threat that caused an unbalanced nervous system which is the trauma symptoms that we experience. The aim is to help you access the body memory of the event, not necessarily the story to resolve the trauma. We don’t have to discuss what happened if you don’t want to.
Who am I?
I have been involved in psychotherapy for a number of years ignited by my interest in my own trauma history. I met Dr Gabor Mate when participating in a healing retreat which took me deep into my healing.
I received feedback from others in the trauma healing field on my potential as a therapist because of my healing journey and this attracted me to the idea of becoming a therapist. I then started to learn Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) and I am one module away from completing the three year course. I also met with Dr Peter Levine for a workshop I did with him on the impact of war and refugees.
I am passionate about what I do, and I have a desire to guide my clients in their healing process by working compassionately with the person and the nervous system, where the trauma is held. You can find me registered on the SE Trauma Institute SE Practitioner Directory.
I work in London, and I also offer sessions through Skype at a reduced rate. I am fluent in English and speak intermediate Spanish.
The Psycedelic Society
I also offer SE sessions at The Psycedelic Society based in Homerton, London on Fridays from 09:45 - 12:45. To book a session click here.
